About Us

Commonwealth Health Emergency Medical Services (CHEMS) originated in 2013 when Commonwealth Health Systems through Moses Taylor Hospital acquired Lackawanna/Wayne Ambulance. In 2014, CHEMS expanded its operations through the purchase of Community Life Systems; making it the region's largest and most advanced lifesaving services and emergency transport provider. While CHEMS is headquartered in Scranton, it has substations situated throughout Lackawanna, Luzerne, Pike, Wyoming and Wayne counties with its Critical Care staff housed on Keyser Avenue, Scranton.

Commonwealth Health Services chose to implement an integrated healthcare system to better provide quality care to patients throughout Northeastern PA. This integrated system is comprised of CHEMS and a network of hospitals; such as Moses Taylor, Regional, Wilkes-Barre General, First Hospital, Tyler Memorial and Berwick. This affiliation does NOT limit patient access to Commonwealth hospitals. It is just the opposite. CHEMS services ALL medical facilities in the area from hospitals to skilled nursing facilities to assisted living to hospice to municipalities and more. CHEMS' main concern is providing patients with quality care while assuring that the patient is transported to the facility of their choice. CHEMS was created on the premise that patient care be addressed throughout the entire patient experience from pre to post-hospital care. CHEMS realizes that patient care begins at the onset of an emergency; not merely when a patient arrives at the hospital.

CHEMS has continued to evolve as it enhances its service level to encompass every aspect of medical assistance required. It introduced the region's first ground critical care transport units, a new neonatal intensive care unit and a medical transport helicopter. These services in collaboration with the other CHEMS transport units will serve the more than 1.1 million people who live in the 11 county area of Northeast PA.

CHEMS employs over 300 individuals who are committed to the community and serve with compassion, integrity and hometown values. Its team is PA certified and includes Emergency Medical Technician-Basics, Paramedics, and Pre-Hospital Registered Nurses. The staff is also comprised of a 24/7/365 Dispatch Center that is EMD certified.Type your paragraph here.
